It’s Not Heaven!

I wrote this piece about nine months ago. I was riding in the car with my husband, and it just came to me. I did some drugs in the 70’s but have not touched any since then. Those were not drugs like meth or heroin.

I don’t know what it is like to become addicted to drugs. But I have cared for numerous drug addicted people in the ER. These are not usually people who are seeking treatment. They were soaring on meth or coming off of it. Either high anxiety or depressive suicidal ideation.

I am not an expert. It only gives me a slight insight into how horrible it must be when you get to the point of addiction.

I doubt that anyone will read this poem and say, “WOW” I will never do drugs. And I could tell you just to say no, but if people could do that, then drugs would not be an issue in the world.

There are numerous reasons a person does drugs.
The ones that struck home for me were,
1. Need to fit in or be accepted.
2. The increase in productivity
3. It is something to do

Every one of these sounds like strong reasons to become controlled by a substance. I am facetious when I say this. I do know that I don’t honestly understand drug addiction, but I do understand pain and trials in life.

I do know what it is like to be needed and fit in. I do understand what abuse is. I do know what it is like have an addictive personality.

I am not judging the person who is addicted. I am urging the person who thinks they can control drugs to step away from that need. Meth will take over your life. It will draw you into a world you will not want to leave until you are swallowed up by darkness.

It is hard to go to work every day or to be in pain or to want to be accepted. If you ‘re going to be a healthy person you need to step up to the plate and work on your problems. Don’t take the easy way out with the first taste of drugs.

Anyone who is addicted knows it was easy at first to just try it. Once you fall into the depths of addiction, it will become your living nightmare.

There is always another way to solve a problem than to choose drugs. Become accepted by those who look up to your strength because you didn’t start taking drugs. Stand for what is in your heart not what is in your head. When your head tells you just to do it, your heart will lead you away from it.

Be an example for another person. You may never know who is watching you and looking up to you, but you can be sure someone is.
