Jesus, Santa Poem And Their Values

What does Christmas mean to you? Is it a day of family and hope? To each of us, Christmas has a different meaning.

For a couple of months before December 25th, you prepare for this special day. You shop and spend time with friends. You have work parties and school parties. You make candy and plan your big meal for the family.

Below is my Jesus, Santa poem and their values you can teach your children this Christmas and every year to come.red background with jesus and santa

Christmas is advertised everywhere as a day to give, spend time with family and show love. You have cheer in your heart and a sparkle in your eye. Everyone is happy and excited to give their kids all they never had on Christmas morning.

Then along the way you hear an occasional “remember the reason for the season” and “Merry Christmas.”

Maybe you go to a church that emphasized Jesus and not the love of the day. The teaching is to only focus on Jesus and not on presents for the kids. Yes, there are religions like this.

But Jesus is Christmas and Santa, and Jesus can both be a part of your world. I want to help you understand better how to incorporate both Jesus and Santa into the values you teach your kiddos. Everyone can have the beauty of Christmas, giving, love, family and the salvation and history of Jesus.

We celebrate Christmas on December 25 because it is the day, we have chosen to wish Jesus Happy Birthday. Jesus was born on this day or a day close to December 25th.

Luke 2:11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. (NIV)

History of Santa

Santa Clause was formed from after a man in the fourth century named St. Nicholas. St Nicholas parents died when he was young leaving him a wealthy child and consequently a wealthy adult.

The most famous story is about his kindness toward a man who had three daughters. The daughters couldn’t get married because their father was poor and did not have a dowry (money paid to the groom) to offer with his daughters a a bride. One-night St. Nicholas dropped a bag of gold down the chimney, and the oldest daughter could get married.

St. Nicholas was so kind he was made a saint. He is known as the saint of children. St Nicholas was born human and died a human. Jesus was born human, died human and rose again.

What values does Jesus teach us

  1. Faith- Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.jesus nativity scene
  2. Hope- Psalm 39:7 And now, O Lord, for what do I wait? My hope is in you.
  3. Unconditional love- Colossians 3:14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony
  4. Forgiveness- Luke 6:27 But I say to you who hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
  5. Give freely of ourselves- Luke 6:38 Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.

What values does Santa teach us

  1. Be kind- Santa teaches children to be good, help others and be kind. He explains if you do these things you will santa vectorreceive presents at Christmas. All humans who feel goodness will want to emulate this goodness. It doesn’t mean they will do so, but the emotion of kindness is something they will always carry inside of themselves.
  2. Giving-Santa teaches to give at Christmas.
  3. Hope- The belief that Santa builds a strong desire for hope.
  4. Magic of love-Santa brings an increased love at the Christmas season with the giving and excitement of the Christmas spirit.

Teach values from both

As our children grow, they will no longer believe in Santa, but Jesus will remain in their lives forever. The magic of Christmas brings the love of Jesus to children through the spirit of giving that we see in a man in a red suit with a white beard.

No, Jesus is not Santa, and Jesus is our savior. I am not saying to teach our children that Santa and Jesus are the same, but the values are very close. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with the hope and magic children see in Santa. Our children see the whole world differently than we do as adults.

Santa can be the fairytale that children need to believe in love and goodness. He can help children to understand the same excitement and giving they see in Jesus as they grow. Incorporate the values of Jesus into the belief of Santa. Children need to believe and have hope. You can teach our children the love of Jesus and the binding love that Santa represents.

I hope that my Jesus, Santa poem and their values has given you some ideas on how to teach the values of both Santa and Jesus to your children.

I know many will disagree with my theory here. But I love Jesus, and I believe in magic. I also believe that everything we as parents can do to grow this love and point it toward their savior is one step closer to the harmony and goodness of hope and faith.

I am in no way saying that Jesus and Santa are comparable. This post is designed to give a different perspective on Christmas and how both Jesus and Santa can have a positive impact on the lives of our children.

I do love questions and comments and would much appreciate any input you have to offer.

  1. This is so beautiful Laura and I do see a comparison because Jesus brings us gifts every day and the more we turn to Jesus as our saviour the more kindness we feel and more love we give
Santa does the same I guess if only once a year – His gifts bring smiles to the children as does Jesus

What a wonderful post thank you, my dear friend and blessings

  2. Hello Laura, that was a very nice post. I had never known the origin of Santa Clause up until I read your post. It was a really nice thing saint Nicolas did for that family. Jesus and Santa teach very good values, values that children as well as adult should portray and imbibe  all the time. I think it’s important to try and chip in Jesus to our kids this festive season and not focus solely on Santa. Jesus is the reason for the season. The sooner they realize that the better in my own opinion.

    • Thank you for the read. I am so happy I could give you some info you are not familiar with. and yes the earlier we teach our kids about Jesus the more they will know. They are very impressionable at a young age.

  3. Thank you for reminding us the true reason we celebrate Christmas, which is the birth of our savior Jesus Christ. It’s easy to get distracted with gifts, food, and family — so I’m glad your reminding us all that Christmas is not about all of that.

I feel sorry for people that call it Xmas or don’t celebrate Christmas at all because it’s such a wonderful and special holiday.

I’ll be sure to spread the word this year and remind people about Jesus Christ, while also having fun.

    • Yes Jesus is the reason for the season but so is love and love of family. We will pray for those who do not include Christ into their Christmas. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

  4. HI Laura,

Can you offer any ideas on how on how one can give to the children in such a way that does not propagate the trap of materialism.  I see children becoming more and more obsessed with material things and fear that it is a trap they will struggle to break free from.

For a small child it must be very hard to separate the emotion from the object.

    • Remy, this is such a good question. I believe children are always going to have that sparkle in their eye from the excitement of gifts. But as parents we can teach them values and pray they follow them. Values such as giving is far greater than receiving. As they grow they will understand this better. Also parents may want to over indulge their children because they want the kids to have so much more than they did. I believe to limit the gifts gives each gift more meaning.

      Hope this helps.

  5. I agree that there is room for both Jesus and Santa at Christmas time. Obviously, Jesus is the reason for the season, and we should be careful not to teach kids idolize Santa, but Santa does have many Christ-like characteristics. Santa is very special, but he does only bring one gift per child in our house. I want my kids to enjoy the Santa tradition, but not believe he is the end-all-be-all of Christmas.

  6. Hello Laura,

How appropriate is you blog these days before Christmas. Sadly, many children will not have Jesus in their lives. But, as you put it, they may all learn of the love Jesus put our here for us all. Nice for us to all take a break from being adults and rest back into our child hearts to enjoy Christmas as a child again, with all the children of the world.

I have been to Africa in 2012, Kenya and Tanzania. The poverty among the little ones cared for the Missionaries of Charity comes to mind. Then the little boy leading his grandfather about to beg for alms, whose eyes were visibly impaired by cataracts.

I do not have any children, but just love to see the children in all their youthful ideas, actions, words, interests. May God give them and all of us “Peace on Earth and good Will to every heart.” and to you and all of us. Have a Blessed Christmas, all WA.

    • Thank you so much for your beautiful comment. You are so right. My husband and I support my cousin who is a missionary in Kenya. We are not there but we do follow their newsletters and see so much poverty in Africa. The children are so thankful for the smallest thing. It does warm my heart to see such gratefulness. And it is a blessing to see so many come to Jesus through his and his teams work. I would want the blessing of the knowledge to be upon every child this Christmas and every day throughout the year. You are a blessing. Thank you and God bless you. Merry Christmas

Everyone gathered waiting for them ..

Merry Christmas also for you and your whole family.

  9. Hello Laura

Very nice article as Christmas is around the corner. Commerce has made December all about gifts and parties so your focus on the Christian message is what we need to hear and read about. Being a Christian myself the birth of Christ is very important as God provided with Jesus a way to be saved and be in his good grace. We do point out to our grandkids the christian significance of the birth of Christ and this article helps me relate it to Santa Claus also. Thanks for this wonderful message and a Very Merry Christmas to you and your loved ones. Blessings  and Peace. Cheers
