Martin Luther King Jr. was born “Michael King Jr.” to Reverend Michael King Sr. and Alberta King on January 15, 1929. He was one of 3 siblings. From 1955 -1968 Reverend King Jr. was a well-known leader and activist of the civil rights movement. Based on his Christian beliefs and his training on nonviolence, he led and encouraged nonviolent movements.
His career in activism was not without hardships. He had a belief that all men are created equal, and segregation was ungodlily and unlawful. He followed his beliefs and desire to help the “negro community” out of oppression and into a life of freedom.
King was arrested 29 times during his activist lifetime. On his 13th arrest from his jail cell, he wrote his famous “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” where he argues that the system was unlikely to change and requested legal channels step in to promote social change. In his letter, he stated, “We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”
Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated at 6:01 pm on April 4, 1968. In his last speech, he stated, “I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. So I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”
His last speech led the nation to believe that he had seen the Lord and knew he was going home.
Throughout his short life, Martin Luther King Jr. gave over 2000 speeches from which many quotes were derived. He was a man of God and had a heart for justice and equality. He had a dream.
