World Overcomers Rise Above Abuse And you can also

We are all world overcomers in one form or another. Life has a way of dealing out trials and then lays them down at our feet. How we choose to handle these trials is who we will become. I wrote this poem a couple of years ago to help all of the world overcomers rise above abuse.

poem world overcomers

I was an abused child. For years I felt all alone until I began to study statistics and talk about it openly. It is funny how people who have been through similar circumstances started coming out from under the cracks. No one wants to talk about it until they have someone who will understand.

I am willing to talk about abuse, so you can also. What I mean is, if someone does not make people aware of their abuse, then no one will feel comfortable coming out with their feelings.

Let me give you a few statistics on child abuse. The numbers are staggering. Children need love, cherishing, and protection. Instead, they go through hell in a world they no longer trust.

As reported by Childhelp

Every year more than 3.6 million referrals are made to child protection agencies involving more than 6.6 million children (a referral can include multiple children).’ Yearly, referrals to state child protective services involve 6.6 million children, and around 3.2 million of those children are subject to an investigated report.

In 2014, state agencies found an estimated 702,000 victims of child maltreatment. This would pack 10 modern football stadiums. I did not write this post to tell you about child abuse, although I want you to have some brief information. I am writing to tell you that you are all world overcomers. You can rise above absolutely anything that has happened to you.

Become Stronger

Abuse will affect you and will change who you could have been inside. But at the same time, it will make you stronger.

I was a timid child. My sister would listen for me, and I would talk for her. In a way, we were inseparable because we felt a need to protect each other. At least that is my opinion of my life with my younger sister.

We grew up watching my dad abuse our mom. But it wasn’t until I was 30 years old that I began to remember what had happened to me. I won’t go into the details because abuse is abuse. It affects a person’s life no matter what kind of abuse, physical or emotional, or both.

I never did use this abuse as a crutch to get attention or as an excuse to feel sorry for myself. When I did begin to remember, I sought help and started working through it.

Skimming the cream off

Working through abuse is a lifelong process. I describe it as skimming the cream off of the top of a bucket of cow’s milk. We milk the cow and put the milk into a bucket. The milk then sits in the bucket, and the cream comes to the top. We skim the cream off of the top and make butter.

We continue to do this until we have removed enough cream. This is what it is like to work through abuse. You skim a problem off the top so another problem can surface and continue to do this your whole life. You become more healthy as you complete each process of skimming.

I wrote this poem to depict the fear and feel of abuse and how it affects a person’s life. There are times when you will feel like everything is swelling and rushing around you. These are the times when the cream is coming to the top of the bucket. It is time to work through more feelings as they surface in your life.

Life mirrors the vast waters

The rushing waters reach the ocean, where it is calm again. But if you don’t keep your head above the water, you will drown while you are processing your past effects that affect your feelings today. You don’t have to do it all alone. There are many people here to help you rise above abuse to become one of the world overcomers.

You work all of your life intermittently, and one day you find that you have risen above the issues and realize how incredible you are. It feels complicated when you are in the middle of the problems. I have been through this process for many years, and I am here to tell you that it does get better. When I could keep my head above water, I could see myself as one of the world overcomers.

Fear

This is where you come into the picture. Some of you will be willing to admit abuse because you have worked through it. But some of you are hiding behind it so you can hang onto the pain and suffering.

The pain and suffering give you an excuse to be angry and not forgive yourself. I’m not talking about forgiving the abuser, although that is also a necessary step, rather forgiving yourself. It takes this self-forgiveness to find your real potential and place in this world.

I am not trying to make you angry or offend you. I am giving you hope to move forward and grow. Let me put this a different way.

Fear is debilitating. Everyone in this world has fear, and some have more than others. If you are an abused child, you may use the past pain to hide behind, so you won’t have to face the fear of something new. You may be dragging your feet to join the ranks of world overcomes. I know I did for many years. I believe I used the pain to cover the fear until I was 30 years old and decided to work through my issues.

Can you identify with this thought process? You may think my actions and thoughts are unsympathetic. This is not true. I went through this same thing, and I am a world overcome, and you can also be.

You can be a world overcomer also. You can do anything you set your mind to do. You can rise above the darkness and find the light in your life.

World overcomers rise above abuse

You are one of the world overcomers. You have made it this far and are still alive. Use this problem as a way to gain strength, not as a crutch.

Step out of your comfort zone and rise above abuse. Do not use fear and abuse as a shield to keep you where you are. It took many years for me to rise out of the depths of the water. I worked hard, time after time, and still am working on it.

You have a future and a life ahead of you. Don’t let your abuser have control. Get help and take back who you are. You can say you are one of the world overcomers like myself and rise again. I have faith in you.

  2. We all have our battles to fight, and we have no idea what others are struggling with. What is an easy conquer for some, can be a deer in headlights situation for others. I love your message about overcoming the trauma. For someone to admit to themselves that this has happened to me, but I got a plan to work through it is one of the bravest things you can do. Ultimately, you have to be on board to save yourself from any form of self-destruction. Your illustration of the milk and cream is a great visual explanation.

    • Jen, you are right. Everyone struggles with something and we can not judge another by what we see. I wrote this to help those who may have difficulties conquering an abusive thought process. If they work through the pain then they will grow and mature.
Thank you for your comment. I greatly appreciate it.

  4. Laura,

This is great. It takes a big step to overcoming it. Abusers and some ‘so-called’ support systems like to silence abusers. Naturally, abusers will try to silence you, but those who are supposed to be on your side will often tell you to ‘let it go’. Sadly, people treat the abused as if they are the bad guy.

    Great post.

  5. Hello ma’am.
The content on this post is something I would look forward to. Overcoming past traumas and demons is a very difficult thing to do, especially when they become part of who you are today. I can do whatever it takes to rise again but they will find a way to drag me back down.
I like your choice of images you as well as the content your website is focused on. Please keep up the good work.

    • Michael,
It is like the cream on the milk. You overcome one issue and others will surface. Don’t let them drag you back down, instead seek help and overcome again and again. You are one of the world overcomers.
