Will You Fly? From Fear To Power And Beyond What is my fear?

My favorite quote of all time is by Erin Hanson.
“What if I fall? Oh, but my darling, what if you fly?”
I have formed parts of my life around this quote. Will you fly? Will you have the strength to go from fear to power and beyond what is my fear?

Often in my life, I have been known to step away from something fearful instead of pursuing it. I have a fear of failure or falling like so many people also have. I am talking about a venture or a time in life that will help you grow and learn.

I am not talking about walking away from a bad situation that is harmful. If you are in a bad and fearful situation, then I do urge you to run.

Three Examples Of Fear

I always like examples to help me understand better. Here are just 3 examples of fear of failure.

a girl looking back with a white scarf on with poem Will you fly from fear to power
  • Beginning new-Like going to college at 30 when you are a single parent with two kids. When allowed to better your life, it would be best to face your fears and find a way to improve.
  • Starting over-Or maybe you have had a bad relationship. You meet a new person that is good and stable, but you walk away from a lifetime of happiness because you are afraid to make the same mistake twice.
  • Moving up-Or, maybe you have been offered a promotion, and you turn it down because you are afraid you can’t do it well.

These three examples of fear of failure could stop before you get started. But will you fly or go from fear to power?

When you are faced with a new opportunity, does your mind replay all of the times you failed? You dwell on it so much that anxiety creeps in, and you let go of an opportunity that could have changed your life.

Stepping Stones To overcome fear

When my mind replays all of my past failures, I start to think it is easier to stay in a safe zone and not try again. But in reality, my past experiences were not failures. They were stepping stones to learn and move forward. These times helped me improve on the next venture I undertook.

Fear can be debilitating and you may be surprised by the definition of fear:

an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

It is a belief that something will happen. Fear is not the actual situation but a perceived threat. It is something that has not yet happened, but our mind plays out all of the what-ifs.

Let’s take a look at a scenario

You went for a drive to sonic to get that yummy foot long coney cheese dog. On your way there, you had a wreck. It wasn’t a bad one, but it did shake you up and got your adrenaline going.

Because of the fear, the wreck caused you to decide not to leave your house again. I am not talking about agoraphobia but a choice you made to keep yourself safe based on a fearful situation. You wouldn’t go to the grocery store or to get food. You wouldn’t go to work or to visit family. You had no food or money, and eventually, you lost everything.

Do you see where I am going with this exaggerated scenario? You stopped everything in life because you had a fear of something bad happening again. If you fear and do not face it and move on, you are only harming yourself. You will have many fears in your life, and you will feel like giving up or running away. But you can not. You have to face the fear head-on and overcome it.

You want to change careers or take a promotion at work, but you are afraid you don’t know enough. Maybe you don’t know all you should. You will never know everything before you make a change. You start adventures so they can learn new things.

Will You Fly? From Fear To Power And Beyond, what is my fear

No matter what your fear is, you do have the power to face it. Fear of failure can stop you from walking through open doors put there just for you. Go through that open door and make mistakes. When you make a mistake, then find the answer and move on again.

Don’t let stagnation be a stumbling stone; go ahead and plunge into a new realm of your life. Use those mistakes to give yourself strength.

Seize The Opportunity

Sometimes families and friends get in our way. They are not always supportive, but it is usually for a reason based on love.

So your family and friends don’t want you to take the promotion or go back to school. It may be because they don’t want to see you get hurt, so they will not support you going face-first into a situation that may be difficult. People will try to stop you for many reasons. Try to understand and figure out what is best for you.

You may feel all alone. You have your inner strength and heart to guide you. You do not have to have someone else to push you forward. You have a heart that is beating to move you in the right direction. Even if no one else supports you mentally or emotionally, you know what you need to do.

If you have an idea, a thought, or an opportunity, you have to seize it. Throw in a bit of passion that will take the place of fear. Set a plan and some goals in motion and go for it.

quote by erin hanson

Your Heart Will Guide You

You have to believe in yourself. Don’t worry about what others say about your situation. Don’t let others break you down. Stand tall, trust your decisions and your heart to lead you down the right path. Build a vision, a passion, and a dream. Then push forward to carry out your heart’s desires. Fear will not harm you unless you allow it to overtake you.

When you get discouraged by a fear of falling, remember what Erin Hanson said,
but my darling you might fly.”

Are you willing to stop before you soar just because of fear? Are you ready to give up or not begin something just before you have that big breakthrough?

I leave you with this quote by Jeanette Coron
“On the other side of fear is your breakthrough.”

Spread your wings and fly. Go from fear to power. Overcome your fear and liberate your future.

  1. I love this quote! It’s very powerful!

Fear of failure will keep you in your comfort zone, if you stay in your comfort zone you will never grow.

I totally agree that you have to face your fears, when you do a lot of the time you think back and ask what was I afraid of?

People who love you will try and stop you from being hurt. They do it out of love.

    • Darren, Yes facing your fears will take the power out of them. We have to step out of our comfort zone to grow.

  2. Thanks for sharing this post, it has inspired me to achieve my goals!

I have just turned 19 and I have dream to create my own online business that I can rely on to support me financially. I have to say though that over the years I have had many people saying negative things about what I’m doing and how they don’t agree with what I’m doing.

If I ever listened to them I would never make progress, I would be living thier lives not mine so I think it’s important to fly as you simply just have to go for it and not listen to what other people think!

    Thanks again,

    Josh

  3. Your post is so timely and so true.  We can all get caught up with fear of failure and walk away from a situation that might have been life-changing in a good way.  Yes, conquering your fears does give you power.  Having the courage to face fears is not always easy, but our attitude can help.  If we do not want fear to stop our progress, we need to figure out a way to overcome that fear.

Your “flying” quote reminded me of a favorite quote of mine.  I wrote a book about building my homestead in Alaska, and used a different quote at the beginning of each chapter.  This quote is by Guillaume Apollinaire, and is as follows:

“Come to the edge….No, we will fall

Come to the edge…No, we will fall

         They came to the edge

He pushed them, and they flew.”

Perhaps your article will serve as the push to help someone overcome fear.

  4. I absolutely love that quote too! Such a great concept to have in your mind at all times. Although sometimes putting it into action can be a lot harder than thinking about it. I think that it relates a lot to vulnerability. And I am not good at being vulnerable and taking risks. Thank you for this reminder to focus on the amazing possibilities that are out there instead of the fear of falling. You’ve helped me in renewing my resolve to fly!

    • Mariah, Yes it is hard to put into action what we learn. Overcoming fears is a difficult one. It is so much easier to stay in areas we already know. I am happy you were able to get inspiration out of this post. Thank You for stopping by.

  5. Hey, Laura, I love what you are saying here.

I actually have a fear that I’m having to deal with in recent years. I have digestive problems that almost killed me at one point several years back. I’m doing pretty good now by sticking close to home and making most of my own food. I’ve also become a bit wary of germs because I’m very afraid of getting so sick again. It’s the reason I don’t go very far. I’m afraid to get stuck and have to eat something that will make me ill. But I’m getting older and feel like I’m missing out on things by not traveling more.

I’ve faced a lot of other fears, and I’m determined to face this, too. Your words have inspired me to keep working on it. Thanks! 🙂

    • Stella, I can relate to your fears. I recently faced a life threatening medical condition. Situations like these instill within us a fear of dying. I can not control when I live or die. I had to come to terms with this fear or it would debilitate me and keep me from living life to its fullest. This fear still creeps up but I face it and move forward.

If I were to stuff it down and not deal with the fear it would only become larger than life.

I wish for you the best. Keep working on your fear and you will overcome it.
